Photo probably taken in 1894, before the baths were open to public… Site where I got it says 1900, but that would be impossible due to Cliff House version in back, which burned down December 1894.Postcard, appears to be adaptation of above photo, though Cliff House has been modified to the 1896-1907 French chateau-like version that Adolph Sutro built.View on Dec. 29, 2012
In 1966, when the fate of the complex looked to be demolition and high-end apartments, perhaps a shopping mall, a random fire broke out on June 26, burning the baths to their foundation. In 1980, the National Park Service bought the land and added it to the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

In this final clip, from the 1958 film, The Lineup, note the skating rink, which replaced the largest pool in 1937.
Always been one of my favorite places to visit in San Francisco. Especially since they filmed part of “Harold and Maude” there! Enjoyed seeing the juxtaposition of photos.

i was actually hoping to embed the clip from Harold & Maude, but though a Youtube video exists “about it,” the actual clip was not available.
