Exodus: San Francisco’s Black Community in the 1850s

I plan to post some new articles on here soon, but wanted to let you know that my article on SF’s earliest Black community–published in The Argonaut in 2021–is now available for reading online at this link. My “Classic San Francisco” walking tour traverses through the main neighborhoods discussed in the article.

Many San Franciscans know a bit of the history surrounding the Great Migration and the rise of the predominantly Black neighborhood of the Fillmore District surrounding WWII, but with this article, I dig deep, going back to the California Gold Rush-era, relaying the much lesser known story of SF’s earliest Black community and the struggles they faced under racist laws.
